crystal polymorphism is an important and fascinating aspect of solid state chemistry with far reaching implications in the pharmaceuticals, agrisciences, nutraceuticals, battery and aviation industries. late appearing more stable polymorphs have caused numerous issues in the pharmaceutical industry. experimental polymorph screening can be very expensive and time consuming, and sometimes may miss important low energy polymorphs due to its inability to exhaust all crystallization conditions. in this paper, we report a crystal structure prediction (csp) method with unprecedented accuracy and efficiency, validated on a large and diverse dataset including 65 molecules with 135 experimentally found polymorphic forms. the method combines a novel systematic crystal packing search algorithm and the first use of machine learning force fields in a hierarchical crystal energy ranking. our method not only reproduces all the experimentally known polymorphs, but also suggests new low energy polymorphs yet to be discovered by experiment that might pose potential risks to development of the currently known forms of these compounds. in addition, we also demonstrate, in two prospective drug development projects, how the method was used to accelerate clinical formulation design and derisk downstream processing. the high accuracy, reliability, and efficiency of our method with large scale validations and prospective studies position it for routine molecular crystal structure prediction in drug development.

single silicate crystals hosting tiny magnetic inclusions are remarkable targets to study the paleointensities of the earth and extraterrestrial samples. since the pioneering work done in late 1990s, paleointensity studies using various silicate minerals such as feldspar, quartz, zircon, pyroxene, and olivine with magnetic inclusions trapped during grain growth or exsolved from the host phase have been reported. it has been shown that some single crystals have the ability to record paleomagnetic information as reliable or more reliable than the whole rock, by direct comparison of the obtained paleointensity estimate from single crystal and the whole-rock sample or the magnetic observatory data. various rock-magnetic studies also support the fidelity of these crystals. here, we provide a brief review of the rock-magnetic characteristics of the single crystals, the mineralogical background of the hosting silicates, and experimental procedures developed to obtain reliable data from magnetically weak samples with distinctive rock-magnetic features. we also overview the studies on paleointensity and related topics on various terrestrial and extraterrestrial samples published mainly after the comprehensive reviews in late 2000s. the present review covers the advantages as well as the limitations and caveats of paleointensity studies using single crystal samples and will help readers who wish to utilize this technique in their research. graphical abstract

this book contains the proceedings of a nato advanced study institute entitled "characterization of crystal growth defects by x-ray methods' held in the university of durham, england from 29th august to 10th september 1979. the current interest in electronic materials, in particular silicon, gallium aluminium arsenide, and quartz, and the recent availability of synchrotron radiation for x-ray diffraction studies made this advanced study institute particularly timely. two main themes ran through the course: 1. a survey of the various types of defect occurring in crystal growth, the mechanism of their different methods of generation and their influence on the properties of relatively perfect crystals. 2. a detailed and advanced course on the observation and characterization of such defects by x-ray methods. the main emphasis was on x-ray topographic techniques but a substantial amount of time was spent on goniometric techniques such as double crystal diffractometry and gamma ray diffraction. the presentation of material in this book reflects these twin themes. section a is concerned with defects, section c with techniques and in linking them. section b provides a concise account of the basic theory necessary for the interpretation of x-ray topographs and diffractometric data. although the sequence follows roughly the order of presentation at the advanced study institute certain major changes have been made in order to improve the pedagogy. in particular, the first two chapters provide a vital, and seldom articulated, case for the need for characterization for crystals used in device technologies.
